Temporary Flight Ban For Royal Portrush 2025 Open

Royal Portrush is gearing up to host the 2025 Open Championship later this year, and as part of the preparations, the government has enacted temporary flight restrictions over the area to ensure public safety.

Overview of the New Regulation

Enacted on 20th February, the regulation—formally known as the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland) Regulations 2025—establishes a no-fly zone during the tournament period.

Details of the Flight Ban

  • Timing: The restrictions come into force at 04:30 on 13th July and remain in effect until 21:00 on 21st July 2025. Note that the timing is based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is one hour behind British Summer Time.
  • Altitude and Area: No aircraft are permitted to fly below 1,400 feet above sea level within a circular zone centered at the coordinates 551213N 0063741W. This zone extends to a radius of 0.85 nautical miles, a measure designed to mitigate risks from low-flying aircraft during the event.

Who Must Comply?

The regulation applies broadly to most flights within the designated area. However, there are critical exemptions to maintain vital services:

  • Special Permissions: Aircraft operating with specific clearance from the Police Service of Northern Ireland Airspace Co-ordinator.
  • Essential Services: Operations by police air support, emergency medical services, and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency are not subject to these restrictions.
