Patrick James McDonald, 34, appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court this morning by videolink from Waterside Custody, facing charges including grievous bodily harm with intent, theft and several driving-related offences – among them driving whilst disqualified.

McDonald was arrested on Saturday, 8 February, following a report of a serious assault on a 22-year-old man in Limavady on 1 February. A police officer said he could connect McDonald to the charges.

The court heard how the victim was rushed to Causeway Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit shortly thereafter. The court heard how the 22-year-old has been on assisted ventilation for the past 48 hours and is receiving treatment for reduced kidney function. Additional injuries include trauma to internal organs – with concerns regarding the spleen and potential damage to the liver and bowel.

McDonald spoke only to confirm the charges against him. There was no application for bail and he was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear again before Limavady Magistrates Court on 5 March 2025 for a further update on the case.

On Sunday, the PSNI confirmed that the victim remains in a critical but stable condition.
