NW200 Without Bikes: Councillors Slam Fair’s Loss Of Iconic Motoring Displays

community Feb 28, 2025

Councillors Darryl Wilson, John McAuley and Mervyn Storey have voiced their disappointment over removing the truck and classic car displays from the Ballymoney Spring Fair – for a second year running.

They compared the move to staging the NW200 without motorbikes, arguing that such a decision undermines a long-standing local tradition.

According to the statement, council officials cited health and safety concerns when excluding these attractions, leaving little room for alternative solutions. The councillors maintain that, had they been involved in the decision-making process, a safe compromise could have been reached.

Highlighting Ballymoney’s proud motoring heritage, they warned that the absence of these displays will likely impact not only attendance figures but also the distinctive character of the fair.

The councillors stressed that decisions of such significance should involve elected representatives and called for greater transparency and consultation on matters affecting major community events.

We contacted the council earlier this week seeking clarification on the matter, yet no response has been forthcoming.
