New Developments Prompt Council to Postpone Theatre Decision
Mar 18, 2025
A notice of motion concerning the future of Coleraine's Riverside Theatre was postponed by Causeway Coast and Glens Council this evening at the Leisure & Development Committee after new developments emerged.
The motion, proposed by Alderman Boyle and seconded by Councillor McCully, sought affirmation from the council that the Riverside Theatre should remain operational due to its significant cultural value. Councillors intended to formally communicate their stance to both the Vice-Chancellor of Ulster University and the Minister for the Economy, requesting clarity on the theatre's future.
However, addressing the council, Alderman Boyle revealed that recent communications from Ulster University had prompted the delay. "Our motion this evening appears to have already prompted a response from the University," said Alderman Boyle, referencing a letter sent earlier today to Council Chief Executive David Jackson.
"We welcome that a dialogue has started between the University and the Council, focused on keeping the theatre open," Alderman Boyle continued. Councillors will receive copies of the university's letter shortly, with the council expected to carefully consider its contents before issuing a response.
The postponed motion will now be revisited once councillors have had adequate time to evaluate this latest development.
