Council Approves 80-Home Social Housing Scheme In Coleraine
Feb 26, 2025
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council approved a major social housing development of 80 homes in Coleraine.
Councillors gave the go-ahead at this morning’s Planning Committee meeting for six one-bed apartments, 14 two-bed apartments, nine two-storey townhouses, 40 two-storey semi-detached houses, and seven two-storey detached houses on land north of Laurel Park, close to Killowen Primary School.
Principal planning officer Shane Mathers drew attention to a letter of support from the chief executive of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE). The letter described the development as a key scheme in the 2024/25 year that was “critical to address social housing need in the council area”.
“Capital funding for new builds in 2025/26 remains uncertain,” Mr Mathers said, quoting the NIHE’s letter. “And a deferral of the application would put the proposal at risk.”
In addition to three areas of open space, the plan includes a parkland area, woodland planting and parking provision. Of the 80 planned dwellings, 77 are earmarked for social housing.
