Seasonal Charges To Apply At Four North Coast Car Parks
Feb 05, 2025
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will introduce parking charges at four car parks along the north coast this summer, despite plans previously being put on hold.
Seasonal charges will now apply at three seafront car parks in Ballycastle and on West Strand in Portrush, with motorists expected to pay 50p per hour between April and September. The proposal, originally set to be implemented last year, was delayed amid criticism over inadequate consultation with local residents.
A consultation process conducted at the end of last year paved the way for the decision, which was ratified by the council on Tuesday night. In a bid to address local needs, residents of Rathlin Island and regular island workers, along with boat owners at Ballycastle Marina, will be eligible for permits exempting them from charges.
Taking to social media Councillor Cara McShane said;
"Disappointing that Alliance, DUP (minus Bill), UUP and TUV voted against SF's proposal to not introduce car park charges at Ballycastle's seafront and West Bay in Portrush.
Ballycastle is the only town in this part of Ireland with an inhabited island. The complexities of introducing the policy have not been considered and the overwhelming consultation responses against this proposal, completely ignored."
