Ballykelly Could Reemerge As The Ideal Site For A Heathrow Logistics Hub – Says Campbell

community Feb 06, 2025

East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has reaffirmed his robust support for establishing a Heathrow Logistics Hub at Ballykelly, particularly in light of the renewed commitment to Heathrow Airport’s expansion, which includes plans for a third runway announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Ballykelly, with its expansive acreage and proximity to Londonderry Airport, had long been touted by major stakeholders as a prime location. Around eight years ago, public and private sector organizations from across the UK were invited to bid for one of four regional logistics hubs to support the Heathrow expansion project. In 2019, Ballykelly was successfully shortlisted as one of 18 sites nationwide, underscoring its strategic advantages. At that time, Campbell and his colleagues were strong proponents of the proposal.

Now, with renewed momentum behind the third runway project, Mr. Campbell is urging decision-makers to once again recognize Ballykelly’s potential as the Northern Ireland hub—a move that could unlock significant economic benefits for the region. He has previously tabled a Commons Motion emphasizing the economic advantages of these logistics hubs, noting:

“The expectation is that in each area ultimately chosen, thousands of jobs will be created, helping to deliver employment sustainability right across the nation and ensuring economic prosperity reaches areas with lower economic activity.”

Reflecting on this renewed opportunity, Mr. Campbell commented:

“The Heathrow expansion represents a major infrastructure project that will deliver jobs, investment, and long-term economic growth across the UK. Ballykelly remains a compelling choice for a regional Heathrow Logistics Hub, with its excellent transport links, strategic location, and the potential to create high-value employment throughout the North West.”

Heathrow’s expansion is anticipated to benefit businesses and workers across the country, with logistics hubs playing a crucial role in spreading economic gains beyond London. Mr. Campbell is calling on government ministers, Heathrow Airport officials, and local stakeholders to ensure that Northern Ireland secures a key role in this national infrastructure initiative.
